The non-negotiables
- Jack stands, always. A floor jack lifts the car; it isn't designed to hold it up while you're underneath. Use stands rated above your vehicle's weight at the jack points specified in the owner's manual, and never work under a car supported by a jack alone.
- Wheel chocks. Place them against the wheels that stay on the ground whenever you jack up an axle, so the car can't roll.

Fire extinguisher — get the right class
A Class B extinguisher (rated for flammable liquids like gasoline and oil) or a combination ABC unit should live within reach of any workspace involving fuel lines, a battery, or an engine. A kitchen fire extinguisher rated only for paper/wood fires (Class A) isn't appropriate for a garage.
Never run a car's engine in a closed garage, even briefly with the door "cracked." Carbon monoxide has no smell and can build to dangerous levels faster than most people expect — always work with the garage door fully open or the car outside.
Working on EVs and hybrids
High-voltage components (orange cabling, the traction battery, inverter) should be left to trained technicians — they carry lethal voltage and require specific lockout procedures. DIY maintenance on an EV (tires, 12V battery, wiper blades, cabin filter, brake fluid) is no different from a gas car in terms of safety gear; it's only the orange-marked high-voltage system that's off-limits without training.
