The non-negotiables

Fire extinguisher — get the right class

A Class B extinguisher (rated for flammable liquids like gasoline and oil) or a combination ABC unit should live within reach of any workspace involving fuel lines, a battery, or an engine. A kitchen fire extinguisher rated only for paper/wood fires (Class A) isn't appropriate for a garage.

Carbon monoxide is invisible

Never run a car's engine in a closed garage, even briefly with the door "cracked." Carbon monoxide has no smell and can build to dangerous levels faster than most people expect — always work with the garage door fully open or the car outside.

Working on EVs and hybrids
