Establishing the method
This is the first article in our instrumented testing section, so it's worth setting out how we test — the same protocol applies to every subsequent test.

Conditions are recorded and published — date, ambient temperature, surface, elevation and tyre specification — because a 0–60 time without conditions is close to meaningless. Cars are tested with a full fuel load minus what's burned, on the tyres they're delivered with, in their most aggressive launch mode.
We publish what we measure, including when it's worse than the claim. That's the entire point of instrumented testing.
The car
The SL63 S E Performance is the most extreme version of Mercedes' roadster, and its powertrain is genuinely complex:

Note the architecture: this is a performance hybrid, not an efficiency one. The small battery and rear-mounted motor exist to add power and torque-fill, not to save fuel. Understanding that explains everything the numbers show.

What the numbers actually tell us
1. It comprehensively beats its own claim. Mercedes quotes 2.8 seconds; the measured figure is 2.5. Manufacturers usually publish conservative numbers, but three tenths is a substantial margin — and it puts the SL63 within 0.1 second of the mechanically identical, 68-pound-lighter AMG GT63 S E Performance coupe. In other words, the convertible's extra weight and structural compromises cost almost nothing in a straight line. All-wheel drive and 1,047 lb-ft will do that.
2. The weight is the headline compromise. 4,811 pounds is an enormous figure for a two-seat roadster — this is a car that weighs more than many three-row SUVs. The hybrid system is responsible: the non-hybrid SL63 weighs around 4,305 lb, meaning the electrification adds roughly 500 pounds. The performance masks it in a straight line; physics reasserts itself everywhere else.
3. 1.02 g of lateral grip is genuinely strong for a car this heavy, and it's largely down to the tyres — 305-section rears and Michelin's Pilot Sport 4S do real work. Standard 2.5-degree rear-wheel steering sharpens turn-in noticeably, making the SL feel more manoeuvrable than its dimensions suggest.
4. The EV numbers expose the powertrain's purpose. An official 1 mile of electric range is, frankly, a rounding error — though on test the car managed 4 miles before the V8 fired. This is not a plug-in hybrid in any meaningful efficiency sense. The battery exists to deliver 201 hp of instant rear-axle torque, and that's all.
5. 24 mpg on a 75-mph highway run is middling, and honestly about what you'd expect from 4,811 pounds and a twin-turbo V8. The 35 MPGe figure flatters it slightly. Nobody buys this car for economy, but it's worth knowing the hybrid badge buys you nothing at the pump.
Beyond the numbers
The chassis prioritises composure over comfort. Body motions are well controlled through corners — impressively so for the mass — but that firmness translates to noticeable chassis communication around town. This is a grand tourer tuned toward the sports car end, and it's less relaxing than an SL arguably ought to be.
The brake pedal is the notable flaw. The standard carbon-ceramics are brutally effective and fade-free, but reviewers consistently report inconsistent pedal pressure — sometimes mushy, sometimes steely, rarely predictable. Stopping power is unaffected, but the feel isn't. This is the familiar challenge of blending regenerative and friction braking, and it's one the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid currently handles better.
The verdict from the data
The SL63 S E Performance is a genuinely extreme machine whose measured numbers exceed its maker's claims — 2.5 seconds to 60 mph and a 10.4-second quarter at 135 mph from a near-2.2-tonne convertible is a remarkable demonstration of what 805 hp, 1,047 lb-ft and all-wheel drive can overcome.

Add the inconsistent brake-pedal feel and a ride tuned firmer than an SL traditionally is, and you have a car of spectacular capability and clear compromises.
If you want the fastest, most technologically extreme SL ever built, the numbers vindicate it completely. If you want the SL's traditional character — effortless, relaxed, comfortable open-top grand touring — the numbers suggest looking at a lesser model in the range.
