Why track charging sessions at all
Gas cars make cost-per-mile obvious because you pay at the pump every time. EVs blur that because most charging happens at home, billed inside a monthly electric bill you don't itemize. The tracker exists to separate that cost out — logging kWh added and price paid each session so you can calculate a genuine cost-per-mile figure rather than relying on marketing estimates.
What to log each session
- Date, location type (home, workplace, public Level 2, DC fast charger)
- kWh added (from the charger display or your car's app)
- Cost paid, or your utility's per-kWh rate if charging at home
- Odometer or range reading before and after
The formula behind the numbers
Cost per mile = (kWh added x price per kWh) / miles of range gained. If you add 30 kWh at $0.15/kWh and gain 110 miles of range, that's $4.50 / 110 = about 4 cents per mile — roughly a third of what a comparable gas car costs per mile at current fuel prices.

Reading the trend, not just one session
A single fast-charging stop on a road trip will spike your average — that's expected and shouldn't be treated as your everyday cost. Track at least two to three weeks of normal driving to get a blended figure that reflects your actual home-to-public charging mix.
Public charger pricing is rarely a flat per-kWh rate. Many networks charge per-minute plus session fees, or tier pricing by charging speed, which can make identical kWh amounts cost very different totals — always check the receipt breakdown, not just the total.
What the tracker won't tell you
- It doesn't account for battery degradation over years of use — that requires separate range-testing over time.
- It won't include home charger hardware or installation cost unless you add it manually as a one-time expense.
