What "ADAS" actually covers

ADAS is not one feature — it's the category name for every system that uses cameras, radar, ultrasonic sensors or lidar to watch the road and either warn the driver or intervene briefly. SAE International classifies driving automation on a 0-5 scale, and everything on this page sits at Level 0-2: the driver is still fully responsible for the vehicle at all times, even with every ADAS feature switched on.

Two cars can both be marketed as having "ADAS" while offering completely different feature sets, so it's worth knowing what each acronym actually does before comparing trims or shopping used.

  • ESP / ESC (Electronic Stability Program / Control) — uses a yaw sensor to detect a skid and brakes one wheel individually to pull the car back in line; this is the single feature NHTSA credits with the largest crash-reduction impact of any safety system introduced since the seatbelt.

Collision-avoidance features: AEB, FCW, blind-spot monitoring

  • FCW (Forward Collision Warning) — audible/visual alert when you're closing on the car ahead too fast.

What's the difference between ABS and ESP?
ABS only prevents wheel lock-up during hard braking in a straight line. ESP/ESC goes further — it constantly monitors whether the car is turning the way the steering wheel says it should, and brakes individual wheels to correct a skid, whether you're braking or not.
Is ADAS the same as self-driving?
No. ADAS features (Levels 0-2 on the SAE scale) assist a fully attentive driver; none of them are designed to replace the driver, and manufacturers require hands-on-wheel and eyes-on-road at all times.
Do all new cars have automatic emergency braking?
