In praise of the strange
The motor industry is, by and large, conservative. Enormous development costs and unforgiving markets punish risk, which is why most cars look and work broadly like most other cars.
Which makes the genuine oddballs worth celebrating — the cars where someone asked a question nobody else was asking, and built the answer anyway.
Some were disasters. Some were brilliant. And a surprising number turned out to be right, just early.
The three-wheelers
The Reliant Robin is Britain's most-mocked car, and the mockery is largely deserved — a fibreglass three-wheeler with a famous tendency to lift a wheel. But the reasoning was sound: three-wheelers occupied a different UK tax and licensing category, making them cheaper to buy and run. It was a regulatory arbitrage with a body on top.
The lesson: tax structures shape cars far more than engineers do. The Robin is that principle in its most visible form.
The amphibians
The Amphicar — a genuinely amphibious 1960s convertible — is the definitive "why?" car. It was a mediocre car and a poor boat, which is what happens when a single object attempts two incompatible briefs.
And yet the underlying observation was correct: vehicles that cross domains are genuinely useful. The modern answer is a car with a trailer, which is unglamorous and works.
Engines in the wrong place
Rear-engined cars — the Beetle, the original Porsche 911, the Renault Dauphine, the Chevrolet Corvair — put mass behind the rear axle, producing handling that was, in period, genuinely dangerous.
The industry largely abandoned the layout. Porsche didn't, and spent decades engineering around the fundamental compromise until the 911 became one of the best sports cars in the world.
The lesson: a flawed layout, pursued with enough obsession for long enough, can become a strength. Most manufacturers were right to abandon it. Porsche was right not to — and both can be true.
The doors
Gullwing doors (the 300SL), scissor doors (Lamborghini), suicide doors, and the BMW Isetta's entire front opening as a single door. Most are impractical — they need overhead clearance, complicate crash structures, and cause problems in car parks.
But the 300SL's gullwings weren't styling: its space-frame chassis had high sills that made conventional doors impossible. The most theatrical detail in motoring was an engineering necessity.

The genuinely visionary weird
Some oddballs were simply early:
The original Mini's transverse-engine, front-drive layout was radical in 1959 and is now used by essentially every small car. Weird became universal.
The Citroën DS's hydropneumatic suspension was baroque, complex and delivered a ride quality nothing matched for decades. Complexity in service of a genuine goal.
The Toyota Prius was mocked as a science project. It made hybrids mainstream, and as our powertrain comparison concluded, the hybrid remains the answer with the fewest compromises for most people.
The McLaren F1's central driving position is still the only genuinely correct place to sit in a car, and still almost nobody does it.
What the oddballs teach
1. Weird is often just early. The Mini's layout and the Prius's powertrain were both dismissed and both became normal.
2. Regulation shapes cars more than engineers do. The Reliant Robin, India's sub-four-metre SUVs, and the CBU/CKD duty ladder are the same phenomenon.

4. Some weird is just wrong. The Amphicar was a bad car and a bad boat. Not every unasked question needed answering, and pretending otherwise is nostalgia rather than analysis.

The bottom line
The genuine oddballs are worth celebrating because they're evidence of an industry occasionally willing to ask different questions — and because a surprising proportion of them turned out to be right, just early.
