Two tiers of notification
Direct engagement — a reply to you or an @mention — is treated as high-priority and delivered immediately. Ambient thread activity, where a conversation you're part of moves on without directly involving you, is deliberately downgraded to a digest so your inbox and notification bell aren't flooded by busy threads.
Controls you have
- Mute a specific thread permanently — you'll stop getting any notification from it, including direct replies.
- Turn off email for comment notifications while keeping in-app alerts (or the reverse).
- Switch the daily digest to weekly, or turn it off entirely, from the Preference Centre.
- Block a specific member, which also silences their replies and mentions without a notification trail.
Accessibility and delivery
In-app notifications are announced to screen readers and keyboard-navigable per WCAG guidance, and never rely on color alone to indicate an unread state — an unread badge always carries a number, not just a color change. Email notifications use plain-language subject lines (no bare "You have a notification") so they're scannable in a crowded inbox.
Frequency safeguards
To prevent notification fatigue during viral threads, no more than 5 individual reply/mention emails per hour are sent to one account; anything beyond that rolls into the next digest automatically, with a note that some notifications were bundled.
Muting a thread is one-way from your side — the other participants aren't notified, and you can unmute at any time from your notification settings.
