The Garage Guru badge system awards points for verified, useful contributions — answering questions, submitting maintenance logs, and completing guides — not for volume of posts. Members move through 5 tiers (Rookie, Wrench Hand, Shop Regular, Garage Guru, Master Tech) based on cumulative points, with the top tier requiring 2,500+ points and at least 90 days of active membership. Badges are visible on profiles and comments; they do not unlock discounts or paid perks.

Why a badge system, and why it isn't a loyalty program
Garage Guru exists to surface the members whose input is actually reliable — the ones who post a torque spec from the owner's manual instead of a guess, or who follow up a question three days later with a photo of the fix. It is not a discount scheme and it isn't tied to purchases. A badge is a signal to other readers: this person's comment history is worth trusting more than an anonymous one-liner.
How points are earned
- Verified answer (marked helpful by the original poster or a moderator): 10 points
- Maintenance log submission with photos/receipts: 15 points
- Guide completion (finishing a multi-step DIY walkthrough and reporting back): 20 points
- Quiz or trivia participation (see the EV Knowledge Quiz and Guess the Car Quiz): 5 points, capped at 25/month so quiz spam can't inflate rank
- Flagged or removed content: points forfeited and a temporary earning freeze
What does NOT earn points
Comment count alone, likes/upvotes alone, and account age alone are not scored. This is deliberate — we don't want the system to reward whoever posts most, only whoever helps most. A single well-documented answer can outweigh twenty low-effort replies.

Moderation and integrity checks
Because a badge is a trust signal, we audit it. Moderators can claw back points retroactively if a "verified" answer is later found to be wrong or unsafe (for example, an incorrect torque spec that could damage a wheel hub). Repeat offenders are capped at Wrench Hand regardless of point total. This keeps the top tiers meaningful rather than just a function of tenure.
Badges reset only if an account is inactive for 18 consecutive months. Short breaks (vacations, busy seasons) do not affect standing.
How this connects to other community features
Garage Guru points feed into the Quiz Champ Leaderboard and are one factor (not the only one) in Comment of the Week selection. They do not affect Monthly Community Awards, which are voted on separately by the community rather than scored automatically.
