Reader Choice Awards: What Gets Nominated and How Winners Are Picked

How our annual site-wide awards cover content, community members, and features, not just vehicles.

Engagement and Gamification Region: Global Updated July 2026 By the True Motion Auto editorial team
Quick answer

The Reader Choice Awards run once a year and cover a broader scope than vehicle-only voting — categories include best guide/article, most helpful community member, favorite new site feature, and a handful of vehicle categories overlapping with (but not identical to) Best Cars by Category Voting. Nominations open for 2 weeks, voting runs 3 weeks, and winners are announced with a published methodology recap explaining exact vote counts and any exclusions.

Why this is broader than a "best car" poll

Most of our community voting features (Battle of the Brands, Best Cars by Category) are strictly vehicle-focused. Reader Choice Awards instead recognizes the whole site experience across a year — which guide actually helped someone fix a real problem, which community member's answers stood out, which new feature (a badge system, a calculator tool, a redesigned hub page) readers found genuinely useful.

Category groups

  • Content: best how-to guide, best comparison article, best explainer of the year
  • Community: most helpful member (informed partly by Garage Guru standing, but voted separately), best community answer
  • Features & tools: favorite new site feature or tool launched that year
  • Vehicles: a small number of vehicle categories, deliberately limited so this doesn't just duplicate Best Cars by Category Voting

Nomination and voting process

  1. Nomination window (2 weeks): members submit candidates per category; site editors add eligible content/features members might not think to nominate themselves (e.g., a backend improvement readers wouldn't know to name specifically)
  2. Shortlist review: nominations are consolidated and duplicates merged, similar to Best Cars by Category Voting's approach
  3. Voting window (3 weeks): one vote per category per account
  4. Announcement: winners published alongside a methodology recap

Good to know

Winners in the Community category receive public recognition only — there's no cash prize, consistent with the non-monetary approach used across all True Motion Auto gamification features.

Why full methodology gets published

Because this award touches real people (community members) as well as content and features, we publish the vote count breakdown and note any excluded/flagged votes so the process is auditable rather than a black box. This mirrors the transparency approach used in Community Prediction Polls' resolution process.

Frequently asked questions

Can staff-written articles win a content category?
Yes, any published guide or article from that calendar year is eligible regardless of whether it was staff-written or community-contributed.
Is there a cash prize for winning?
No, recognition is public (badge, profile note, featured placement) rather than monetary.
How is this different from Best Cars by Category Voting?
Reader Choice Awards is annual and spans content, community, and features with only a limited vehicle category slice, while Best Cars by Category runs its own more frequent cycle focused purely on vehicles.
Can I nominate myself for the community category?
Self-nomination is allowed but is far less common than being nominated by other members based on visible contributions.
Where can I see past years' winners?
An archive of past Reader Choice Award winners by year and category is linked from the current award page.
