Where things stand
The three-door Mahindra Thar is due a proper facelift, and test mules have been spotted repeatedly through 2026. Expected launch is around August 2026 — most likely ahead of the festive season — though Mahindra has not officially confirmed a date.
A word of caution before we go further: the Thar has been updated more than once recently, and the coverage has become muddled. Mahindra launched an updated Thar in late 2025 at a headline ₹9.99 lakh, with a new grille, dual-tone bumpers, revised R18 alloys, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen (up from 8 inches), an all-black dashboard, a rear parking camera integrated into the spare wheel, rear wiper and washer, and two new colours (Tango Red, Battleship Grey).
What is coming now is a more substantial facelift, bringing the three-door Thar visually and technologically into line with the larger Thar Roxx. Everything below is based on spy shots and supplier reports and should be treated as expectation, not fact, until Mahindra confirms it.
What's expected to change
Exterior — Roxx-ification. Spy shots point to a redesigned front fascia with a six-slat grille, circular LED headlamps with integrated DRLs, and C-shaped daytime running lamps — all lifted directly from the Thar Roxx. Redesigned bumpers, new alloys, and refreshed LED tail lamps are also expected. The side profile appears essentially unchanged, which is correct: the Thar's silhouette is the product.
Interior and tech. Expect a 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 10.25-inch digital driver's display, ventilated front seats, a wireless charger, automatic climate control and rear AC vents.
Safety — the big one. Reports point to:
- Six airbags as standard
- 360-degree surround-view camera
- Level 2 ADAS — adaptive cruise control, lane assist, blind-spot monitoring, collision avoidance
The Thar three-door currently holds a 4-star Global NCAP rating. With six airbags standard and a full ADAS suite, a higher score is plausible — and in an Indian market where Bharat NCAP results have become a genuine purchase driver, that matters commercially far more than the new grille.
Powertrains — unchanged. Expect the existing line-up to carry over:

The price question
This is where the reporting genuinely conflicts, and it is worth being straight about that.
Some outlets expect a hike of ₹20,000–₹50,000; others suggest ₹40,000–₹60,000. Listings currently peg the facelift at an expected ₹9.50–17.00 lakh ex-showroom, which would represent essentially flat pricing against the current ₹9.99–17.62 lakh range.
Our read: with GST adjustments having already pulled the entry price down to ₹9.99 lakh, and with Mahindra explicitly using the Thar to undercut the Maruti Jimny (₹12.32–14.29 lakh), a large price rise would be strategically odd. Expect a modest increase on higher variants, and the ₹9.99 lakh entry point defended aggressively.
Why the Thar still matters to Mahindra
It is easy to treat the Thar as a lifestyle curiosity. It isn't.
Mahindra sold around 10,700 units of the Thar and Thar Roxx combined in June 2026 — enough to place it comfortably inside India's top fifteen. Mahindra as a whole sold 60,393 units that month, growing 27.66% year on year and sitting just 1,683 units behind Tata for second place in the Indian market.
The Thar is not a halo car that loses money. It is a volume product with halo economics — high margin, high brand equity, low discount. Mahindra's entire premium repositioning over the last five years traces back to the 2020 Thar.
The competition
- Maruti Jimny — the obvious rival, and the one the Thar's pricing is aimed squarely at. Lighter, more genuinely capable off-road in some respects, and considerably more expensive
- Force Gurkha (three-door) — the direct rival on capability; the five-door Gurkha takes on the Thar Roxx
- Neither has anything like the Thar's cultural weight
What we're watching
- Whether Level 2 ADAS actually appears. On a body-on-frame off-roader with a short wheelbase and a rear-mounted spare, calibrating ADAS is non-trivial. If Mahindra pulls it off at this price, it is a genuine achievement.
- The Bharat NCAP score. Six airbags plus ADAS should push it above four stars. If it does, Mahindra will market nothing else.
- Whether the entry price holds at ₹9.99 lakh. That number is doing enormous strategic work against the Jimny.
