The honest assessment
The Jetta's virtues are practical: a genuinely big trunk and rear seat, grown-up highway manners, Puebla-built value. Its concessions are equally practical: the base engine is adequate rather than eager, cabin plastics sit below the class's best, and there's no hybrid and no AWD — the Civic, Corolla and Elantra all out-flank it somewhere.
The GLI is the sleeper: GTI-adjacent hardware in a roomier, cheaper, more discreet body. As a value performance play — and as the last stick-shift VW — it deserves more attention than it gets.
