The Mk8.5 refresh gave both fast Golfs what owners demanded — better infotainment and physical steering-wheel buttons again — and took away what enthusiasts mourned: the manual gearbox died after 2024. Every 2026 GTI (241 hp, ~$34,000) and Golf R (328 hp, single loaded trim at $49,455) ships DSG-only.
GTI or R
The GTI remains the definition of the daily hot hatch: 241 hp and 273 lb-ft through the front axle, ~27–28 mpg combined, and a chassis whose balance still teaches rivals. The R turns the dial: 328 hp, all-wheel drive with a torque-vectoring rear diff that lets it rotate like something rear-driven, and pace that embarrasses sports cars in weather.
The honest split: the GTI is 85% of the joy at 70% of the price; the R justifies itself where traction or the last tenth matters — or where $50k feels fine for the most complete all-weather hatch on sale.
The honest assessment
The DSG is objectively excellent — faster than any human, smooth in traffic — and subjectively a loss; buyers for whom the stick was the point should look at a Civic Si/Type R or hunt a 2024. The touch-capacitive dash controls, though improved, still trail knobs. And the R's price now brushes territory (used Cayman, Supra) where the practicality argument does the heavy lifting.
Reliability for the EA888 generation is solid; DSG service intervals are the ownership line-item to respect.
The questions buyers actually ask
GTI or Type R/Elantra N? The Honda is sharper and manual; the Hyundai is louder value. The GTI is the most livable and most refined — the daily-first answer.
Is the R worth $15k over the GTI? In the Snow Belt or on track days, yes. On dry commutes, the GTI's balance is arguably sweeter.
Miss the manual enough to buy used? A 2022–24 manual GTI/R holds appeal and value. Just accept the pre-refresh infotainment that everyone complained about.
