As our testing establishes repeatedly — most directly in our public-charging diary — home charging is the foundation of the EV value proposition.
With it, EV ownership is genuinely better than petrol: cheaper to run, nicer to drive, less maintenance, and you never visit a fuel station.
Without it, the running-cost advantage narrows substantially and the time cost is real — every kWh requires you to physically be somewhere, waiting.
If you can't charge at home, our powertrain comparison's conclusion applies: a hybrid may simply be the better answer. That's not a defeat; it's the right recommendation for a lot of people.

Our highest-rated family vehicle, and the reasoning is simple: 300+ miles of range in every configuration.
No compromise trim. You don't buy the expensive version to avoid range anxiety — which removes the biggest source of family EV hesitation.

⭐ Best value — Chevrolet Equinox EV
From $34,995 with 319 miles, and the AWD at $38,295 undercuts an AWD Model Y by over $10,000 with near-identical range.
Our comparison placed it third and said plainly that for a first-time EV buyer who charges at home and doesn't tow, it's arguably the smartest purchase in the segment.
Real-world range holds up, regen calibration is excellent, and the interface is approachable for people new to EVs.
Best affordable — Chevrolet Bolt *(8.5/10)*
The reborn Bolt fixed its predecessor's real flaws: 150 kW charging (10–80% in ~26 minutes) and native NACS, giving Supercharger access.
From $29,990, with a durable LFP battery that — as our used-EV and battery coverage noted — tolerates frequent full charging better than NMC.
Bidirectional charging and 20+ standard safety features at this price is genuinely good value.
Best premium — Porsche Cayenne Electric *(9/10)*
10–80% in around 16 minutes, with the dynamic quality the badge requires. Expensive, and it earns it.
Best character — Rivian R2
345 miles from $46,495, and — as our first drive found — Rivian character survived the cost-down, which is the hardest trick in this transition.
Grand-touring calmness rather than aggression, excellent brake feel, and thoughtful design.

Best redemption — Toyota bZ *(7.5/10)*
From compliance-car punchline to genuinely competitive in one generation: +62 miles of range (314 total), native NACS, 150 kW charging, a much better cabin and roughly $6,800 cheaper.
⭐ And a standard heat pump, which as our winter testing established is the single strongest predictor of cold-weather range.
⭐ What actually matters when comparing
From our testing, in order:
1. Can you charge at home? Everything else is secondary.
2. Real-world range, not the official figure. As our BMW i3 analysis showed, the same car carried a 559-mile WLTP figure and a ~440-mile EPA estimate — a 21% gap between two official numbers. Ask for mi/kWh.
3. Charging speed — the 10–80% time, not peak kW. As our charging-curve testing established, peak kW is the most misleading number in EV marketing.
4. Winter range and whether it has a heat pump. Expect 15–35% loss; the heat pump decides where you land.
5. Total cost including depreciation. As our EV depreciation investigation found, residuals have been volatile — an EV that's cheapest to run can still be the most expensive to own.
⚠️ What we haven't tested
We have not comprehensively tested every EV on sale in the US. Several Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen, Nissan and premium German models would legitimately contend and don't appear here because we haven't driven them, not because we've judged them.
The bottom line
Resolve home charging first. It matters more than range, price or badge, and if you can't, a hybrid may be the better answer.
Family: the Ioniq 9, on 300+ miles in every trim. Mainstream: the Model Y on ecosystem — while noting the gap is narrowing. Value: the Equinox EV, and it isn't close. Affordable: the Bolt, now with NACS and 150 kW charging.
And compare on the right numbers: mi/kWh rather than official range, 10–80% time rather than peak kW, heat pump presence, and total cost including depreciation.
