The most useful EV test in India
The Golden Quadrilateral connects Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata — India's four largest cities — via roughly 5,800 km of the country's best highway network.
It is the single most useful EV route test in India, for a specific reason: it isn't a stunt. It's the actual commercial and personal travel spine of the country. If EVs work on the Golden Quadrilateral, they work for a very large share of Indian long-distance driving.
The constraint we're imposing makes it genuinely testing: public charging only. No overnight destination charging at friends' houses, no support vehicle. Exactly what an ordinary owner would face.
Why this matters more than range figures
As our India coverage has repeatedly established, the decisive question for Indian EV ownership isn't range — it's charging access.
Our apartment-charging test found that a 7.4 kW home wallbox transforms ownership while a 15A socket constrains it, and that the housing society, not the technology, is usually the obstacle.
This trip tests the other half of that problem: whether India's public highway charging network can support genuine long-distance travel.

The infrastructure reality
The honest assessment, stated upfront:
Where it's genuinely good: metro areas and their immediate corridors. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune all have meaningful charging density, and the major expressway corridors between them are improving quickly.
Where it gets harder: the long inter-city stretches, particularly the Chennai–Kolkata leg through less densely served regions. Gaps between reliable rapid chargers widen considerably.
The specific risks:
- Charger availability — a single charger at a location means no redundancy if it's occupied or faulty
- Reliability — as our public-charging diary found, network reliability is the most consistent source of frustration
- Power delivery — chargers frequently deliver below rated speed
- Queueing, particularly at popular highway locations
The planning rules
Adapted from our charging methodology for Indian conditions:
1. Plan around confirmed chargers, not app listings. Call ahead where possible. An app entry is not a guarantee that a charger exists, works, or is free.
2. Never arrive below 20% on inter-city legs. More conservative than our UK guidance, because redundancy is thinner. You need genuine range in reserve to reach an alternative.
3. Charge to 80%, not 100% — the last 20% takes disproportionately long.
4. Precondition using the car's native navigation where the vehicle supports it.
5. Build the itinerary around charging locations, not around daily distance targets. This is the fundamental shift from petrol travel, and resisting it causes most EV road-trip problems.
6. Account for heat. As our India range testing found, sustained highway running at 100 km/h with air conditioning is the hard case — expect roughly 25–35% below claimed range. Our testing also found the counterintuitive result that congested city traffic helps EV range, but this trip is the opposite scenario.

What we expect to find
1. The metro corridors will be comfortable. Delhi–Mumbai and the western corridors should be genuinely manageable.
2. The Chennai–Kolkata leg will be the hard part — longest distance, thinnest infrastructure.
3. Reliability will frustrate more than availability. Based on our public-charging diary, the problem is usually a charger that exists but doesn't work, rather than no charger at all.
4. Time cost will be substantial, and considerably more than an equivalent petrol journey.
5. It will be genuinely possible — which is the finding that matters. Difficult and possible is a very different conclusion from impossible.
