The unfashionable bet that's aging well
For several years, the industry consensus held that the future of the full-size pickup was electric. Ford launched the Lightning, Chevrolet built the Silverado EV, Ram promised the 1500 REV, and the conventional V8 truck was widely treated as a legacy product living on borrowed time.
That consensus has softened considerably. Electric pickup demand proved slower than forecast; Ram cancelled its pure-electric truck entirely in favour of the range-extended Ramcharger (see our separate first drive); and buyers made clear they still want conventional capability. Against that backdrop, Chevrolet's steady, unglamorous investment in the next-generation Silverado — V8 firmly intact — looks less like conservatism and increasingly like clear-sightedness.
We drove a prototype, and the message is simple: the V8 lives, and the Silverado is getting genuinely better.
Why the V8 endures
It's worth being precise about why the V8 persists, because it isn't mere sentiment:
1. Towing and payload without compromise. A V8 pickup tows heavy loads over long distances without range collapse or charging planning. For work use, that reliability is the entire proposition.
2. Refuelling infrastructure is everywhere. Five minutes, anywhere in America, including places no charger will reach for years.
3. Proven durability. Truck buyers keep vehicles for a decade or more and value known, serviceable, repairable technology.
4. Cost. Conventional trucks remain cheaper to buy than their electric equivalents.
5. Buyers genuinely want it. The V8's character — the sound, the delivery, the associations — is part of what people are purchasing. That's a legitimate product attribute, not an irrationality to be engineered away.
6. Fleet and work buyers are pragmatic. They buy what completes the job most reliably and cheaply. For many, that's still a V8.
What the next-generation Silverado brings

Prototype impressions
Refinement is noticeably improved. The most obvious gain. Full-size trucks have become increasingly car-like in comfort, and the next Silverado continues that — quieter, better-damped, more composed on rough surfaces. It's a genuinely pleasant vehicle to spend hours in.
The V8 character survives intact. This matters to buyers, and Chevrolet clearly knows it. The V8's delivery and sound are preserved rather than sanitised — the thing people actually want from the engine is still there.
Capability feels maintained or improved. Towing, payload and the fundamental truck competences appear to be moving forward, not backward. That's the baseline requirement.
The interior is a clear step up. Prototype cabins are always provisional, but the direction is obvious: better materials, better displays, better ergonomics. Trucks are now family vehicles and premium purchases, and the interior reflects that.
The strategic read
Chevrolet is effectively hedging intelligently. Rather than betting everything on electrification (as several rivals did, with mixed results), GM is:
- Keeping the conventional Silverado strong and modern, serving the buyers who exist now
- Continuing the Silverado EV for those who want it
- Preserving optionality as the market decides its own pace
Given how EV pickup demand has actually developed, that looks like sound strategy. The manufacturers who assumed a rapid, total transition have had to retrench; those who maintained strong conventional products have been rewarded.
The honest caveats
Regulatory pressure is real and ongoing. Emissions rules will keep tightening. The V8's long-term future depends partly on policy that can shift, though the current direction is more accommodating than a few years ago.
Efficiency remains the weak point. A V8 pickup is thirsty, and fuel costs are a genuine ownership burden. The Ramcharger's 145 electric miles addresses exactly this for daily use.
This is a prototype. Final specs, powertrains, pricing and equipment can all change before production.
"The V8 lives" isn't "the V8 lives forever." The honest framing is that combustion has a longer runway than the 2021 consensus assumed — not that electrification has been defeated.
The competition
Ford F-150: the perennial best-seller and the benchmark the Silverado must match on every axis.
Ram 1500 / Ramcharger: conventional and EREV — Ram is betting on range-extension while Chevrolet hedges across both.
Toyota Tundra: the credible alternative with strong reliability standing.
The bottom line
Chevrolet's unglamorous, steady investment in the conventional Silverado is looking smarter by the month. Our prototype drive found a thoroughly modernised truck — better refined, better equipped, more comfortable — with the V8 character buyers actually want left emphatically intact, and capability maintained or improved. In a market where pure-electric pickup demand has undershot forecasts and one rival has cancelled its electric truck outright, keeping the conventional truck excellent while continuing to offer electric options is a genuinely sound hedge. The V8 isn't immortal, and efficiency remains its weakness. But it lives, it's getting better, and for the millions of buyers who need a truck to simply work, that matters more than any consensus about the future.
