In June 2026, the Tata Punch became India's best-selling car — a genuine milestone for a domestic manufacturer, and a signal of how completely the micro-SUV has reshaped the market.

But sales charts and comparison-test podiums measure appeal, not ownership. What's it actually like to live with — and does CNG's promised economy survive contact with reality?

Twelve months should tell us.

Why the CNG version

We deliberately chose the iCNG rather than the petrol, for three reasons:

1. It represents how a huge number of Indians actually buy. CNG is one of the most rational choices in the Indian market, and it's under-covered by enthusiast journalism.

2. Tata's twin-cylinder iCNG design solves CNG's biggest problem. As our CNG comparison established, single-cylinder installations occupy most of the boot, while Tata's twin-cylinder under-floor layout preserves near-full luggage space. That claim deserves verifying over a year of actual family use.

3. The running-cost promise is substantial. At a claimed 26.99 km/kg ARAI, the payback maths suggests the CNG premium repays itself within two to three years for anyone covering 60+ km daily. We'll measure whether that holds.

The questions we intend to answer

1. Does the twin-cylinder design genuinely preserve the boot? This is the claim we most want to test, because it's the Punch iCNG's key advantage over rivals. Not measured in litres, but in actual use — a weekend family trip's luggage, a large grocery run, the things people really carry. Our boot-measurement methodology (suitcases, not litres) applies directly.

2. What's the real CNG economy? ARAI claims 26.99 km/kg; real-world is typically 80–85% of that. We'll measure every fill, across city and highway, and publish the running cost per kilometre against equivalent petrol.

3. What is CNG ownership actually like day to day? The under-discussed realities:

  • Queueing at CNG stations — genuinely time-consuming in busy metros, and the most under-reported ownership cost
  • Station availability on longer trips
  • Whether the petrol/CNG switching becomes second nature or stays irritating
  • Range anxiety of a different kind — a 60-litre tank holds roughly 9–10 kg, giving 250–340 km per fill

4. What are the specific CNG maintenance costs? As our comparison noted, CNG requires: spark plugs every 15,000–20,000 km (more frequent than petrol), mandatory cylinder hydro-testing every three years, and the discipline of starting and finishing journeys on petrol. We'll report actual costs and whether the routine becomes burdensome.

5. Is performance adequate when loaded? CNG reduces power output. With a family and luggage aboard, on a gradient, does the Punch cope? This is the question that matters most for a family car.

6. Does the toughness hold up on Indian roads? The Punch's appeal is rugged honesty. Twelve months of genuine Indian road surfaces will test whether that's real or styling.

What we expect — stated upfront
