Toyota fixed almost everything wrong with the bZ4X. We're running the reformed bZ for a year to find out whether the redemption holds up in ownership.

The redemption, tested

The bZ4X was Toyota's first serious EV and a genuine disappointment — mediocre range, slow charging, and a sense that the world's largest carmaker had produced a compliance car.

The 2026 bZ fixed nearly all of it. As our rated review (7.5/10) found: up to 314 miles of range (+62), native NACS, 150 kW charging, a much better cabin, and a ~$6,800 price cut. It went from punchline to genuinely competitive.

But "competitive" was assessed over a week. Toyota's entire brand rests on cars that prove themselves over years, and that's a claim only a long-term test can examine. If any manufacturer should build an EV that ages well, it's this one.

Why the XLE Plus FWD: it's the efficiency and range sweet spot at 314 miles, and the trim we recommended. The 338 hp AWD is quicker and shorter-legged; this is the sensible one.

The questions we intend to answer

1. Does Toyota reliability translate to EVs? This is the most consequential question. Toyota's reputation is the strongest reason to buy this car over an Ioniq 5 or EV6 — and whether that reputation transfers to an electric powertrain is genuinely unproven. A year won't settle it definitively, but it's a start.

2. Does the 314-mile range hold across four seasons? The bZ has a heat pump as standard, which our winter range testing identified as the single strongest predictor of cold-weather performance. We'd expect it to land at the better end of the 15–35% loss band. We'll verify that.

3. Is 150 kW charging enough in practice? It's competitive but not class-leading — the i3 charges at 400 kW, the Ioniq 9 at 350 kW. Does 30 minutes for 10–80% feel adequate on real road trips, or noticeably slow?

4. Was native NACS the transformative fix we called it? Supercharger access was the headline improvement. Does it deliver the seamless experience Tesla owners describe?

5. Does the improved cabin wear well? The 14-inch screen, physical climate knobs and softer materials were a big step up. Do they hold up?

6. What does it cost to run? Charging, tyres, servicing, insurance — all logged.

7. Does "sensible and competent" become dull? Our review found it comfortable and lovely inside but noted nothing about the driving stands out. Over a year, that's either restful or forgettable.

The Toyota bZ went from compliance-car punchline to a genuinely competitive electric crossover in one generation, and our review credited the turnaround. What we couldn't assess in a week is the thing Toyota is actually famous for: whether it still works, cheaply and without drama, years later.

Over twelve months we'll test the range through all four seasons with that standard heat pump, measure whether 150 kW charging is enough, log every cost, and begin answering the question that matters most — does Toyota reliability mean anything in an EV?
