Why long-term testing exists
This article introduces Section 8 of our testing programme, and the format deserves explaining, because it's different from everything preceding it.
A road test captures a car at its best. A week with a freshly-prepared press vehicle, driven on chosen routes, tells you how a car drives — and almost nothing about how it ages. The questions that actually determine ownership satisfaction only emerge over months:
- Does the interior wear well, or does the trim start rattling at 8,000 miles?
- Do the software updates improve it or break things?
- What does servicing actually cost?
- Does the seat still feel comfortable on hour four of the twentieth long trip?
- Does the initial charm survive daily familiarity?
Long-term tests answer those questions, and they're the closest journalism gets to genuine ownership experience.
How our long-term format works:

Crucially: an introduction is not a verdict. This article poses questions; it doesn't answer them. That's the whole point.
Why the Model Y
We've chosen the 2026 "Juniper" Model Y as our first long-term car for a simple reason: it's the default. It's the best-selling EV in the world, the car most people cross-shop first, and — as our rated review (8.5/10) and both the $45K SUV and £40K saloon comparisons found — it keeps winning on ecosystem completeness rather than product superiority.
That distinction is precisely what a long-term test should interrogate. The Supercharger network, mature software and OTA updates all sound excellent over a week. Do they still feel excellent after twelve months and 15,000 miles?

Why the Long Range RWD: it's the range champion of the lineup at 387 miles, the efficiency sweet spot, and the trim most buyers should consider. The AWD is quicker; this one is the sensible recommendation, so it's the one worth living with.
The questions we intend to answer
This is the heart of the introduction, and we'll report against these specifically:
1. Does the real-world range hold up across a full year? Our range methodology predicts roughly 85–95% of WLTP in mild mixed use and 20–30% less in winter. Twelve months lets us verify that across all seasons, on the same car, on the same routes.
2. Is the Supercharger advantage as decisive as we keep claiming? We've argued repeatedly across this project that fast, reliable charging is worth more than the last 30 miles of range. A year of real journeys will either confirm that or expose it as overstated.
3. Did the Juniper update genuinely fix the ride and noise? The old car was criticised for harshness and road noise. Acoustic glass and revised suspension were the answer. A week suggested improvement; a year will tell us whether it's enough.
4. Do OTA updates improve the car or degrade it? As our re-testing policy established, software updates move scores both ways. We'll document every update and note whether it added value or removed it — including whether anything gets paywalled.
5. What does it actually cost to run? Charging (home and public), tyres, servicing, insurance, and any repairs — all published.
6. How does it wear? Interior materials, seat comfort over time, rattles, panel fit, paint.
7. Does the minimalist interface become easier or more irritating? Touchscreen-dependent controls divide opinion sharply on first acquaintance. Familiarity might resolve that — or entrench it.
8. Is efficiency really class-leading in practice? Tesla's claimed ~4.4 mi/kWh is excellent on paper. We'll measure it every month.
What we're expecting to be wrong about
Long-term tests are most valuable when they overturn assumptions, so it's worth stating ours upfront so we can be held to them:
- We expect the charging network to justify our repeated claims. If it doesn't, we'll say so — and that would require revisiting several comparison verdicts.
- We expect winter range loss around 20–30%. If the Model Y's efficiency means it does better, that's a genuine finding.
- We're uncertain about the interface. Our reviews have noted it divides opinion; a year should settle whether familiarity helps.
The bottom line
The Tesla Model Y is the car everyone cross-shops and the one our comparisons keep placing first — on ecosystem completeness rather than outright product superiority. That's precisely the kind of verdict that deserves testing over months rather than days.
