The question that matters

Maruti's reputation in India isn't built on performance or luxury. It's built on something harder to achieve and more valuable: cars that simply work, cheaply, for years, everywhere. Low running costs, cheap parts, service in every town, strong resale.

The e Vitara has to prove that reputation survives electrification — and that's a genuinely open question, because everything that makes a Maruti a Maruti is about ownership, not driving. You cannot assess it in a week.

So we're running one for twelve months.

Why this car matters

As our rated review (8.5/10) and our India EV comparison both found, the e Vitara's decisive advantage isn't any specification — it's the ecosystem: 1,500+ EV-ready service touchpoints, the largest network in India, plus the trust that makes a first EV purchase feel safe.

But claimed service reach and actual service experience are different things, and that gap is exactly what a long-term test exists to measure.

Why the Zeta 61 kWh: maximum range, Level 2 ADAS and all the essential features without paying the Alpha premium for nice-to-haves. It's what we'd recommend, so it's what we should live with.

The questions we intend to answer

1. Is the service network genuinely EV-ready, or just EV-labelled? This is the most important question in this test. Maruti claims 1,500+ EV-ready touchpoints, and that claim is central to the car's entire proposition. We'll visit service centres in different cities — including smaller towns — and report honestly on whether the EV expertise is actually there. If it is, it vindicates the strongest argument for buying this car. If it isn't, buyers need to know.

2. What's the real range in Indian conditions across a full year? Our India range testing found the counterintuitive result that congested city traffic can help EV range (no idling draw, regen recovery, minimal drag), while sustained 100 km/h highway running in summer heat is the hard case. Twelve months covers monsoon, winter and peak summer — we'll measure all of it, with the air conditioning on, because nobody drives otherwise.

3. Does the 7.4 kW home charger deliver what our testing predicted? Our apartment charging test found a 7.4 kW wallbox should fully charge from 20% within an overnight window. We'll verify it, and record actual electricity costs including the 10–15% AC charging losses most calculators ignore.

4. Does the firm ride become tiresome? Our review noted the suspension is on the stiffer side for Indian roads. A week is enough to notice; a year is enough to judge whether it genuinely wears on you.

5. What does it actually cost to run? Electricity, servicing, tyres, insurance, and any repairs — all published, and compared against an equivalent petrol Maruti.

6. Does the quirky steering wheel stop irritating? A recurring reviewer complaint. Familiarity may resolve it.

7. How's resale sentiment developing? Maruti's resale strength is legendary; whether it transfers to EVs is genuinely unknown, and we'll track dealer and market sentiment over the year.

The specifically Indian questions

Some things only a long-term test in India can reveal:

  • Monsoon behaviour — waterlogging, humidity, electrical reliability
  • Peak summer performance — 45°C+ with continuous AC, and whether thermal management copes
  • Service in smaller towns, not just metros
  • Parts availability and cost for an EV outside major cities
  • Charging on genuine long trips across Indian highways, where infrastructure remains uneven

What we expect — stated upfront

  • We expect urban range to be genuinely reassuring, possibly close to claimed, based on our traffic finding
  • We expect highway range in summer heat to disappoint relative to the 543 km claim — perhaps 25–35% below
  • We're genuinely uncertain about service. This is the claim we most want to verify, and we have no assumption either way
  • We expect running costs to be dramatically lower than an equivalent petrol Maruti

The bottom line

The e Vitara's case rests almost entirely on the Maruti ownership promise — service everywhere, low costs, cars that just work — applied to an EV. That's a proposition about years, not weeks, which makes it exactly the right car for a long-term test.

Over twelve months we'll report on real range through monsoon, winter and peak summer, genuine running costs, home charging reality, and — most importantly — whether Maruti's 1,500+ EV-ready service points are genuinely ready.
