Rivian R1S & R1T Buyer's Guide: The Adventure EVs Grow Up — and Up in Price

Gen 2 brought in-house motors and up to 420 miles; 2026 brings the 1,025-hp Quad, native Tesla charging — and a ~$7,000 price climb to $72,990+. The full R1 picture for buyers.

The R1 at maturity

Rivian's first-generation gamble has hardened into a mature product line. The Gen 2 refresh rebuilt the electrical architecture into zonal computing, swapped to in-house drive units, and upgraded the autonomy hardware; for 2026, every R1 gains a native NACS port — Tesla Supercharger access without adapters — and the range regains its halo: the Quad-Motor, 1,025 hp, 0–60 in about 2.5 seconds, at $117,885 (R1T) and $123,885 (R1S).

The mainstream range: R1T pickup from $72,990, R1S SUV from $76,990 in Dual-Motor form (533 hp) — though 2026 brought a reported ~$7,000 base-price climb, and sources conflict on whether the R1S's cheapest battery survived the year. Range spans 270 to 420 miles by pack.

What they're actually like

Nothing else blends these talents: supercar acceleration, 11,000-lb towing (R1T), air suspension rising to 14.6 inches of clearance, and software with the industry's best over-the-air cadence — 2026's Quad even adds party tricks like Kick Turn. The R1S is the family expression: three usable rows and the same bandwidth.

The honest assessment

The costs are equally clear. Prices climbed just as rivals multiplied; efficiency drops hard with the big-tire adventure specs (the 420-mile figure belongs to road-spec Max packs); and while NACS access transforms road-tripping, the charging experience still trails Tesla's native integration. Rivian's service network, though improving, remains thin outside coastal metros — check your nearest center before signing.

Depreciation on early Gen 1 cars has been steep, which cuts both ways: used Gen 1 R1s are now compelling value for buyers who accept the older electronics.

The questions buyers actually ask

R1S or R1T? The truck tows more and costs less; the SUV seats seven. Utility math, not emotion.

Is the Quad worth $120k? As engineering theater, it's spectacular. As transport, the 533-hp Dual does everything most owners do at $45k less.

New Gen 2 or used Gen 1? Gen 2's architecture and NACS matter long-term. But a well-priced Gen 1 with the Large pack is the value entry into the brand.
