How EV breakdowns differ

An EV breakdown is usually less dramatic than people fear, but it has its own rules. Around half of EV call-outs are caused by the small 12-volt battery, which powers the car's computers and charging logic — exactly as in a petrol car. Running out of charge is rarer than expected and increasingly served by mobile charging. The two things that genuinely differ are towing and high-voltage safety, and both are simple once you know them.

Why EVs need flatbed recovery

Most EVs cannot be towed on their driven wheels. There is often no true neutral that disconnects the motor, so dragging the wheels spins the motor, which can generate heat and damage the drivetrain. The safe method is a flatbed (or, at minimum, lifting the driven axle clear with dollies done by someone who knows the car). When you call for recovery, specifically request flatbed transport and confirm the operator handles EVs.

Never touch damaged orange cables

High-voltage cables and components are coloured orange as a warning. After a collision, if you can see exposed, damaged or wet orange cabling, do not touch it and do not let an untrained person tow the car — it can retain a dangerous charge even with the car off. Move clear, call emergency services if anyone is hurt, and request an EV-trained recovery service.

  1. A 12V jump pack — the single most useful item, since a flat 12V battery is the most common fault. (Jump the 12V only with the car unplugged from charging.)
  2. Tyre inflator and/or repair kit — most EVs ship without a spare wheel to save weight and space.
  3. Warning triangle and hi-vis vest — required by law in many countries and sensible everywhere.
  4. Your charge cables — so a mobile charging unit or a nearby socket can get you moving.
  5. Torch, phone charger, basic first-aid kit, and water — general roadside sense.

What to do when you break down

  1. Get to safety. Move the car off the carriageway if you can, switch on hazards, and stand well clear of traffic — behind a barrier where possible.
  2. Put out warnings. Set the triangle (at a safe distance) and wear the hi-vis vest.
  3. Diagnose quickly. Dead car? Suspect the 12V battery. Flat tyre? Use the kit. Out of charge? Note your location for mobile charging.
  4. Call the right help. Use your EV-aware roadside provider or the maker's hotline.
  5. If there's collision damage near the battery or exposed orange cabling, don't touch it — request EV-trained recovery and keep people away.

Choosing a roadside plan

Before you need it, check that your breakdown cover or the manufacturer's roadside package is genuinely EV-ready. Look for flatbed recovery as standard, mobile charging (a boost to reach the nearest charger), high-voltage-trained technicians, and home-start cover (useful given how often the 12V battery is the culprit). Many new EVs include several years of roadside assistance — know what yours covers and how to call it.

Out-of-charge and regional notes

Running flat is uncommon if you plan around your real range and charging stops, but if it happens, most EV-aware services can bring a mobile charger or flatbed you to the nearest working charger. In India, confirm your provider has EV-trained recovery and flatbed access in your city, as coverage is still expanding; in the UK and US, the major breakdown organisations now offer EV-specific recovery and mobile charging — just verify it is included in your plan.
