MG Windsor Review: Why India's Best-Selling EV Is a Hit

The MG Windsor became India's best-selling EV by nailing space, comfort, features and clever BaaS pricing. We explain exactly why it's a hit — and where it falls short. Our verdict.

Expert Review Region: India Updated August 2026 By the True Motion Auto editorial team

> True Motion Auto Verdict: 8.5/10 > The MG Windsor is India's best-selling EV for good reason: it's spacious, comfortable, feature-loaded and — thanks to clever Battery-as-a-Service pricing — remarkably affordable, with unique reclining "Aero lounge" rear seats that no rival matches. The laggy infotainment and a few odd omissions are real gripes. But as a comfortable, value-packed family EV, it's a deserving hit. India's favourite EV, and easy to see why.

The EV that outsold them all

India's best-selling EV isn't a Tata (the segment leader by brand) or a flashy Mahindra — it's the MG Windsor, a quirky, unassuming electric "CUV" that quietly outsold everything by nailing exactly what Indian EV buyers actually want. Its success pushed MG to genuine prominence in the Indian EV market, and understanding why it won is a lesson in reading a market correctly.

The Windsor doesn't win on dramatic styling or headline performance. It wins on space, comfort, features and clever affordability — the sensible virtues, executed better than anyone expected, and priced brilliantly via MG's Battery-as-a-Service scheme. Having tested it, we understand its runaway success completely. It's a deserving hit, even with a few real flaws.

Why it's a hit

1. The clever BaaS pricing. This is the masterstroke. MG's Battery-as-a-Service scheme lets buyers purchase the Windsor without the battery (from as low as ~₹9.99–13.50 lakh) and pay a per-km battery rental (~₹3.5–4.5/km). This slashes the upfront cost by ~₹3.5 lakh, making the Windsor dramatically more affordable to buy than rivals — the single biggest reason for its sales success. It democratised EV ownership.

2. Space and comfort — the Aero lounge seats. The Windsor is far bigger inside than it looks, and its party trick is genuinely unique: "Aero lounge" rear seats that recline to nearly 180 degrees — business-class-style flat reclining that no rival at any price near it offers. For passengers on long journeys (or in the booming EV-taxi market), it's a genuine, differentiated comfort advantage. It's the most comfortable rear seat in its class, full stop.

3. Feature-loaded. A massive 15.6-inch touchscreen (the biggest in class), ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 9-speaker Infinity audio system, 360-degree camera, six airbags, and Level 2 ADAS on Pro variants. It feels genuinely premium and well-equipped for the money.

4. Reassuring ownership. A lifetime battery warranty for first owners, buyback schemes guaranteeing up to 60% resale after 3 years, and generous coverage — MG built real ownership confidence, crucial for EV buyers.

The numbers

| Spec | MG Windsor | |---|---| | Price (ex-showroom) | ~₹13.99–18.09 lakh (Pro); from ~₹9.99 lakh with BaaS | | BaaS | battery rental ~₹3.9–4.5/km | | Batteries | 38 kWh / 52.9 kWh (Pro) | | Range (claimed) | 331–332 km (38 kWh) / 449 km (52.9 kWh Pro) | | Motor | 134 bhp, 200 Nm, front-wheel drive | | Charging | up to 60 kW DC (Pro); 0–80% ~40–50 min | | Unique feature | Aero lounge rear seats (~135–180° recline) | | Screen | 15.6-inch (biggest in class) | | Warranty | Lifetime battery warranty (first owner) | | Status | India's best-selling EV |

Living with it

Comfortable and spacious. The Windsor's core appeal is comfort — the spacious cabin, the reclining rear seats, the smooth, quiet EV drive. The 134 bhp motor performs wonderfully in the city — immediate power, lively off the line, ideal for heavy traffic, with adjustable regen making slow crawls easy. It's a genuinely relaxing, comfortable way to travel.

The Pro is the one to have. The 52.9 kWh Pro battery (449 km range, faster 60 kW charging, Level 2 ADAS) addresses the base car's main limitation — range anxiety — and is the more practical, future-proof choice for most buyers.

Value that's hard to argue with. Between the low BaaS entry price, the feature count, and the comfort, the Windsor offers tremendous value. It's easy to see why buyers chose it in such numbers.

Where it falls short

We're honest even about a best-seller:

The infotainment is laggy and frustrating. The big 15.6-inch touchscreen looks great but is laggy, and houses too many core functions, making everyday usability genuinely frustrating. For a car built around comfort and features, this is a real, daily irritation.

Odd omissions. The Windsor curiously lacks rear sunblinds, a parcel shelf, and a rear wiper/washer — surprising misses on an otherwise feature-rich car, and practical annoyances.

The MPV-ish design divides. The tall, MPV-crossover silhouette is practical but "not exciting" — some find it quirky-appealing, others plain. It's bought for its substance, not its looks.

Base-battery range is limited. The 38 kWh car's 331 km claimed range is adequate for city use but tight for longer trips — another reason to favour the Pro.

The competition

Tata Nexon EV / Curvv EV: Tata is the EV brand leader — strong alternatives with good range and Tata's deep EV experience.

Maruti e Vitara (reviewed separately): the trust-and-service-network pick — more range, Maruti reassurance, but pricier upfront without BaaS.

Hyundai Creta Electric: the premium mainstream choice — strong brand, less value-focused.

BYD / others: various rivals, though few match the Windsor's comfort-and-value combination.

Who should buy it

Buy the Windsor if: you want a comfortable, spacious, feature-loaded family EV at an unbeatable price (especially via BaaS), you value the unique reclining rear seats and relaxing comfort, and you primarily drive in and around the city with occasional longer trips. Get the 52.9 kWh Pro for the range and faster charging. For comfort-focused, value-conscious family buyers, it's a deserving best-seller. It's also a standout choice for the EV-taxi market, where its rear-seat comfort is a genuine commercial advantage.

Look elsewhere if: you want the best infotainment (the Windsor's is laggy), exciting styling or driving (Mahindra BE 6), or the longest range and most established service depth (Tata, Maruti).

The bottom line

The MG Windsor is India's best-selling EV because it read the market perfectly: it delivers space, comfort, features and — via clever Battery-as-a-Service pricing — genuine affordability, topped by uniquely reclining rear seats no rival offers. The laggy infotainment and odd omissions (no rear wiper, parcel shelf or sunblinds) are real flaws that keep it from perfection. But as a comfortable, value-packed, feature-rich family EV, it's a thoroughly deserving hit, and its sales success is no accident. Get the 52.9 kWh Pro for the range, accept the infotainment quirks, and enjoy one of the most comfortable, sensible EVs in India. India's favourite EV — and it's easy to see why.
