The core idea: electric drive, petrol backup power

A range-extender EV is, fundamentally, an electric car. The wheels are turned only by an electric motor, drawing from a battery you charge by plugging in. What makes it different is a small combustion engine on board whose only job is to generate electricity when the battery gets low. The engine has no mechanical link to the wheels at all, it spins a generator, the generator makes electricity, and that electricity charges the battery or feeds the motor. This layout is called a series hybrid.

In a plug-in hybrid, once the battery is low or you accelerate hard, the petrol engine can clutch in and physically drive the wheels, so it feels and sounds like a conventional car at that point. In a true range-extender, the wheels are always driven electrically; the engine just hums away making power in the background, regardless of speed. That preserves the smooth, quiet EV character even when the petrol engine is running.

Mazda MX-30 R-EV

Mazda revived its rotary engine as a range extender. The MX-30 R-EV uses a compact 830cc single-rotor Wankel engine purely as a generator, paired with a 17.8 kWh battery for about 53 miles (WLTP) of electric range. With a 50-litre fuel tank topping up the battery, total range climbs to around 400 miles or more. The rotary is small, light and smooth, making it well suited to generator duty even though it is thirsty as a primary engine.

Ram 1500 Ramcharger

The Ramcharger shows the idea scaled up for a full-size pickup. Two electric motors (one per axle) produce a combined 663 hp, fed by a 92 kWh battery good for up to roughly 141 miles of electric driving. A 3.6-litre V6 acts solely as a generator, extending total range to around 690 miles. For a heavy truck that tows and travels long distances, exactly the use case where battery-only range and charging are hardest, the range-extender approach is a clever fit.

Nissan e-Power

Nissan's e-Power is a related idea with one twist: there is no charging port. It is a series hybrid that always drives electrically but tops the battery up only from the engine, never from the grid. That gives an EV-like driving feel without needing to plug in, useful in markets where charging is scarce, though it is not a plug-in EV in the usual sense.

Why range-extenders are back

The concept faded when early examples (like the original BMW i3 REx) had small batteries and limited engines. With cheaper, bigger batteries now giving 50-140 miles of usable electric range before the engine ever starts, EREVs are re-emerging, especially in China and for large vehicles, as a bridge for buyers who want mostly-electric driving but are not ready to depend on charging infrastructure for every long trip.
