The fraud that digital was supposed to fix

Mechanical odometers could be wound back, but it took effort and frequently left evidence — misaligned digits, tool marks, disturbed dashboard fixings.

Digital odometers were expected to end that. They did the opposite.

A digital reading is stored in an electronic module, and altering a stored number can be quicker, cleaner and harder to detect than manipulating physical wheels. Tools to do it are widely available and inexpensive.

The result is a persistent problem across used-car markets globally, and a substantial one in India — where a large, fragmented, largely informal used-car market meets high price sensitivity and inconsistent record-keeping.

Why mileage matters so much

Rollback is profitable because mileage drives price heavily:

  • Perceived remaining life — a lower reading suggests more car left
  • Service schedules — major services are mileage-triggered, and a rolled-back car appears not to need one
  • Wear expectations — clutch, suspension, tyres and belts are assessed against mileage
  • Resale value — the effect compounds at every subsequent sale

A rollback of 40,000–50,000 km can move a car's price substantially — which is precisely the incentive.

How it happens in India specifically

1. The market is fragmented. A large share of used-car transactions happen privately or through small independent dealers, with limited documentation.

2. Service records are inconsistent. Where servicing happens at independent workshops rather than authorised centres, there may be no centralised mileage record at all.

3. Multiple owners obscure history. Cars change hands frequently, and each transfer is a chance for history to be lost.

4. Verification infrastructure is developing. Systems exist, but coverage and consistency vary.

5. Cross-state movement complicates tracing — a car sold in a different state may carry little verifiable history from its previous life.

What's improving

Genuine progress is happening, and it's worth noting:

Organised used-car retail is growing rapidly. Large certified pre-owned operations — manufacturer-backed programmes and major used-car platforms — have a commercial interest in verified history, and they perform multi-point inspections and provide documentation. They're more expensive than private sales for exactly that reason.

Digital records are expanding. As authorised service networks digitise and vehicle databases mature, mileage becomes traceable across a car's life. Maruti's vast service network — the largest in India, and something we cite constantly in our comparisons — means a car serviced within it has a substantially better record trail than one that wasn't.

Insurance and registration data provide additional cross-reference points.

How to protect yourself

1. Buy from organised retail if you can afford the premium. Certified pre-owned programmes and major platforms cost more and carry meaningfully lower fraud risk. For most buyers this is the single most effective protection.

2. Demand the complete service history — and check the mileage recorded at each service. A sequence that jumps illogically is the clearest evidence available.

3. Cross-check every document. Insurance records, previous registration papers, PUC certificates and any inspection reports frequently carry mileage readings. Inconsistency between documents is the giveaway.

4. Assess wear against the claimed reading. This is where a rollback usually fails:

  • Steering wheel, gear knob and pedal rubbers — shine and wear that doesn't match low mileage
  • Driver's seat bolster — the first thing to wear
  • Driver's door handle and armrest
  • Brake pedal rubber — often replaced, and a fresh one on a "low-mileage" car is suspicious
  • Tyres — original tyres on a genuinely low-mileage car; replacements suggest more
  • General interior condition relative to the claim

5. Get an independent inspection from a mechanic you chose, not one the seller suggested.

6. Check for dashboard disturbance — tool marks, mismatched screws, or a cluster that doesn't sit quite right.

7. Be sceptical of unusually low mileage. An average Indian private car covers perhaps 10,000–15,000 km a year. A ten-year-old car showing 40,000 km is possible and warrants explanation.

The honest framing

Most used-car sellers are honest, and most low-mileage cars genuinely are low-mileage. Treating every seller as a fraudster is neither fair nor useful.

But the checks above cost nothing and take an hour, and the downside of skipping them is buying a car with 60,000 km of unaccounted wear, an overdue major service, and components closer to failure than you believe.

The single most valuable protection is the service history. A complete, verifiable record from an authorised network makes rollback extremely difficult to conceal — which is also, incidentally, an argument for maintaining your own car within one.
