Citroën C3 and DS3 Takata Stop-Drive: The UK's 120,000-Car Airbag Crisis

120,000 UK cars. A woman killed in France. And an airbag that can fire metal shrapnel into your face. The C3/DS3 stop-drive order, and exactly what to do.

> 🔴 STOP-DRIVE ORDER IN FORCE. If your vehicle is affected, do not drive it. Check your VIN at citroen.co.uk/owners/safety-recall-check.html (or the DS Automobiles equivalent). Citroën recall helpline: 0800 917 9285.

What happened

On 20 June 2025, Stellantis UK issued an immediate stop-drive order for around 120,000 Citroën C3 and DS3 vehicles in Britain, fitted with Takata airbags.

It followed the death of a woman in France, who sustained fatal injuries from an airbag deployment in a 2014 Citroën C3 during what was described as a minor accident. Citroën issued a "code red" safety recall — its most serious category.

More than a year on, this remains a live, unresolved crisis. Many owners are still waiting.

Which vehicles

| Model | Build years | |---|---| | Citroën C3 (second generation) | 2009 – 2016 | | Citroën DS3 | 2009 – 2016 | | DS Automobiles DS3 | 2016 – 2019 |

Citroën's own materials also reference the C3 Phase 2 production window of 24 September 2008 to 21 February 2017.

Recall codes — these appear after you enter your VIN:

  • MK7 (C3, DS3)
  • NQ3 (C3, DS3)
  • GM3 (C4, DS4, DS5)

Also under stop-drive notice at various points: C4, DS4, DS5 and C-Zéro. Do not assume you are clear because you drive a C4 rather than a C3 — check the VIN.

Only vehicles fitted with the Takata PSPI-6 inflator are affected, but the only way to establish that is the VIN checker.

Why Takata airbags kill

This is the largest safety recall in automotive history, and it is worth understanding why.

Takata's inflators use ammonium nitrate as a propellant, without a chemical drying agent. Ammonium nitrate is unstable over time. Exposed to years of heat and humidity cycling, it degrades — and when it degrades, it burns too fast.

When the airbag deploys, the propellant does not inflate the bag. It detonates the metal inflator housing, firing sharp metal fragments into the cabin at high velocity, directly at the occupant's face and neck.

The airbag becomes a fragmentation grenade, positioned twelve inches from your head.

Globally, Takata inflators have been linked to at least 28 deaths and hundreds of serious injuries since 2009.

The critical point for UK owners: the risk increases with age. That is why Stellantis is prioritising the oldest vehicles, and why a car that was "fine" for fifteen years is not fine now.

The consequences of ignoring this

This is not a recall you can put off, and the UK has built genuine teeth into it.

Your MOT. The DVSA flags affected vehicles in MOT records. A car under the stop-drive order can be marked with a dangerous defect and fail its MOT until the airbag is replaced. The flag appears in the vehicle's MOT history and can damage resale value.

(Note: DVSA guidance on MOT handling has been revised more than once during this campaign. Testers were at one stage instructed to test normally and issue a manual advisory. Check the current MOT special notice.)

Your insurance. The ABI advises that you tell your insurer if your car is under recall and follow the advice given. Insurers may refuse cover if a vehicle is knowingly operated while under a critical safety recall.

The law. Driving a car under an active stop-drive order can expose you to prosecution for using a vehicle in a dangerous condition — with reported penalties of up to a £2,500 fine, three penalty points, and potentially a driving ban.

Selling it. Under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, a business cannot sell a product known to have a safety defect — which includes a dealer selling an affected used car. Private sellers are not under the same legal duty to disclose. An investigation found hundreds of affected cars still listed on UK used-car sites with no warning.

If you are buying a used Citroën C3 or DS3 privately: check the VIN before you hand over money. Nobody else is going to.

What Stellantis will do

  • Free airbag replacement
  • Free vehicle recovery/transport to the garage — you should not drive it there
  • Courtesy cars — available, but you must request one through the helpline
  • Owner contact by post, telephone, SMS and email

The part Citroën would rather not discuss

The execution of this recall has been, by any reasonable standard, a shambles — and owners have every right to be angry.

Dealers described being placed under "immense pressure", with phone lines jammed to the point that outbound calls became impossible. Customers reported waits of over an hour on the helpline. Some owners were told their repair could not be scheduled until 2026. Others were told to ring in January to begin booking.

And — extraordinarily — dealers reported that customers were still driving their affected cars to the dealership to be fixed, despite the stop-drive order. That is not the customers' fault. It is a failure of communication.

Meanwhile the recall itself is being run in a staggered fashion, prioritising the oldest vehicles, because parts supply cannot meet demand. Stellantis says it is opening additional airbag replacement sites and exploring at-home repair.

A safety notice that tells 120,000 people to stop driving, and then cannot fix their cars for six months, is not really a safety notice. It is a statement of intent. Owners have been left immobilised, uncompensated for the disruption, and — in many reported cases — unable even to reach a human being.

If you are in that position: request a courtesy car explicitly, in writing, and keep records. You are entitled to ask.

What to do, right now

  1. Check your VIN at citroen.co.uk/owners/safety-recall-check.html (or the DS Automobiles recall site).
  2. If affected: stop driving. Immediately. Not "after the school run".
  3. Call 0800 917 9285. Arrange the repair. Ask for recovery and a courtesy car — do not wait to be offered them.
  4. Update your address with the DVLA if you have moved. Stellantis cannot write to you if it cannot find you, and a very large number of these cars are on their third or fourth owner.
  5. Do not drive it to the dealer. Stellantis will collect it.
  • Stop-drive order affecting ~120,000 UK Citroën C3 (2009–2016) and DS3 (2009–2019) vehicles
  • Takata inflators can detonate and fire metal fragments into the cabin; linked to 28+ deaths globally
  • Driving an affected car can invalidate insurance and expose you to prosecution
  • Repair, recovery and courtesy cars are free — but you must ask for the last two
  • Buying privately? Check the VIN yourself. Private sellers have no legal duty to tell you.
