The recall
In November 2025, a stop-drive recall was issued for the Dacia Spring over a serious steering defect.
The official GOV.UK recall notice describes it plainly: for certain vehicles there is a risk of rupture of the steering rack when subjected to high mechanical stress, which could lead to loss of control and risk of an accident. Customers are requested to immediately stop driving their vehicles.
Affected build window: Dacia Springs manufactured between 28 July 2024 and 17 August 2024.
That is a three-week window. It is narrow, and that is good news — the overwhelming majority of Dacia Springs on UK roads are not affected. But if yours is one of them, the consequence is not a rattle or a warning light. It is the steering rack rupturing under load.
Why a steering rack rupture is different
Most recalls describe a risk that develops over time, or that manifests only in a crash. This one is neither.
The steering rack is the component that converts the rotation of your steering wheel into the lateral movement of the front wheels. There is no redundancy. There is no backup. If it ruptures under high mechanical stress — which is to say, exactly when you are steering hard, such as an emergency avoidance manoeuvre or a sharp corner — you lose all directional control of the vehicle, instantly, at whatever speed you happen to be doing.
That is why this is a stop-drive and not a "book it in when convenient". There is no version of driving an affected car that is safe, because the failure is triggered by the very input you would need to avoid the accident it causes.
What a stop-drive order means in the UK
A stop-drive is the most serious category of vehicle safety notice, and the distinction matters because most drivers do not know it exists.

Stop-drive notices are reserved for defects in brakes, steering, airbags, battery systems or structural components that could fail suddenly.
Driving under an active stop-drive order may invalidate your insurance, and depending on circumstances could result in fines and penalty points.
Recalls in the UK are overseen by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
Other live Dacia recalls worth knowing about
If you drive a Dacia, the Spring steering rack is not the only campaign in circulation. Check your VIN against all of them:
Dacia Duster — rear stub axle carrier mounting bolts. The GOV.UK notice states that due to insufficient tightening of the rear stub axle carrier mounting bolts at the factory, the fatigue resistance of the bolt assembly is reduced. Affected build window: 28 March 2024 – 12 October 2024. This is not a stop-drive, but arrange the repair promptly — a rear axle assembly with reduced fatigue resistance is not something to leave.
Dacia Bigster and Duster — rear springs. A 2026 recall affecting 6,025 vehicles worldwide, built in January and February 2026. A manufacturing defect means the rear springs may not meet the required dimensions, and the left or right rear spring may break — potentially dropping the vehicle body or allowing the broken spring to fall onto the road.
Also on record across the Dacia range (via the EU Safety Gate system): a left curtain airbag fault causing excessive internal pressure and an over-powerful detonation; an R107 connector decoupling causing loss of traction, reduced steering assistance and malfunctioning airbags, parking sensors and brakes; a parking brake actuator position sensor at the wrong angle; and incorrect LPG tank welding permitting gas release into the passenger compartment.
That is a substantial list for a budget brand, and it is a fair thing to weigh if you are shopping.
What to do
1. Check your VIN. Two places, and use both:

2. If your Spring is affected: stop driving it. Now. Not tomorrow, not after one more trip.
3. Contact a Dacia retailer to arrange the repair. Ask about recovery/transport — you should not be driving a car with a potentially ruptureable steering rack to a garage, and you should not have to.
4. Ask for a courtesy car. You are being deprived of your vehicle through no fault of your own.
5. If you are buying a used Dacia Spring: ask for the VIN before you view it, and run it through both checkers yourself. A private seller has no legal obligation to tell you.
