The scale of the problem
Ford has issued 51 recalls covering 11,271,100 vehicles in the first six months of 2026 alone.
For context: Ford issued 153 recalls in 2025, already an all-time industry record. It is on pace to challenge that, and the number of vehicles affected may exceed last year's total.
Two of those recalls carry a do-not-drive warning.
What "do not drive" actually means
Automakers issue a graduated set of advisories, and the distinctions matter:

A do-not-drive advisory is rare and is not issued lightly. It means the manufacturer has concluded that the probability and severity of failure justify stranding its own customers.
The Bronco Sport / Maverick ball joint recall (26S36)
The most serious current Ford advisory.
- Affected: certain 2021–2026 Ford Bronco Sport and 2022–2026 Ford Maverick
- Units: 4,653 — a small number, deliberately targeted
- Recall number: 26S36
- Approved internally: 19 May 2026

The defect: the front lower control arm ball joints may not have been assembled correctly at the plant, or may have been improperly repaired.
The consequence: if a ball joint fails while the vehicle is moving, the driver can lose steering control. That is a total loss of directional control, potentially at speed. There is no partial version of this failure — the wheel separates from its steering linkage.
That is why this one is a do-not-drive rather than a park-outside.
What Ford will do: dealers will visually inspect the front lower control arm ball joint assembly on both sides and repair as necessary, at no cost.
Ford will arrange a tow. Call 1-833-807-3673. Do not drive it to the dealer.
Reimbursement: owners who already paid out of pocket to fix this suspension issue are eligible for a refund, provided the prior repair was performed before 19 June 2026.
Ford's other major 2026 recalls
Even where a do-not-drive order does not apply, several of these are serious:
Seat belt pretensioners — 419,967 vehicles. 2022–2027 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. A seat belt pretensioner may lock up and fail to properly restrain an occupant during a crash. Ford's largest single June action.
Transmission park system — 741,195 vehicles. Announced 4 July 2026. The park function may not fully engage, leaving the vehicle free to roll away on an incline after the driver has exited believing it secured. Do not assume your model is or is not included based on name — check your VIN.
Centre console — 548,000 vehicles. June 2026.
Trailer brakes and indicators — 4.4 million vehicles. Ford's largest recall of 2026. A software fault could cause the brakes and indicators on a connected trailer to stop working. Fixed via an over-the-air update. Affects 2021–2026 F-150, 2022–2026 Super Duty, 2022–2026 Maverick, 2022–2027 Expedition, 2024–2026 Ranger, 2026 E-Transit and 2022–2027 Lincoln Navigator.
Combined with the July park-system action, Ford has recalled well over 1.7 million US vehicles in a matter of weeks.
Is Ford's car quality actually worse — or is it just telling you more?
This is the fair question, and the honest answer is: probably some of both.
Ford's argument is that the recall volume reflects an intensive strategy to find and fix hardware and software issues quickly. It says it has more than doubled its safety and technical expert teams and increased testing of critical systems. On this reading, a high recall count is a sign of a company that is looking — and the alternative (undetected defects on the road) is worse.
There is something to this. A manufacturer that recalls 4,653 vehicles over a ball joint defect it found itself is behaving responsibly.
The counter-argument is harder to dismiss. In late 2024, NHTSA fined Ford for failing to comply with federal recall requirements. Ford issued the most recalls of any automaker in 2022 and 2023, and has racked up billions in warranty costs — money that comes off the bottom line and, ultimately, out of product development. Companies that are simply "being thorough" do not usually get fined by the regulator for how they handle recalls.
Our read: Ford has a genuine quality problem and a genuinely more aggressive detection posture. The second does not excuse the first, but it does mean the raw recall count overstates how much worse Ford is than its peers.

1. Check your VIN. Now. ford.com/support/recalls or nhtsa.gov/recalls. Ford has 51 open campaigns this year. Model name is not sufficient — the affected populations are defined by build date and plant.
2. If you're under a do-not-drive order: stop driving. Call 1-833-807-3673 and arrange a tow. Ford pays.
3. Being covered by one recall does not cover you for another. Each campaign has its own defect and its own remedy. Check for all open recalls on your VIN, not just the one you heard about.
4. Keep the repair documentation. It matters at resale.
