The industry spent years promising pure electric pickups. Then demand cooled, and the plans changed. The 2026-27 EREV wave: Ram, Scout and Hyundai
Ram is first out of the gate. The Ram 1500 REV — formerly known as the Ramcharger — enters production in the second half of 2026 as a 2027 model. That is a landslide, and it explains the pivot better than any press release. Offered a clean-sheet electric truck or the same truck with a gasoline safety net, American buyers overwhelmingly picked the safety net. Automakers noticed.
The honest assessment
EREVs are a genuinely clever answer to a real problem — but they are not free of trade-offs. You are carrying two powertrains: big battery plus engine, fuel tank and exhaust. That means more weight, more complexity and more parts to service than either a pure EV or a conventional truck. Skeptics will fairly call it a transitional technology.
The counterargument: the transition is where America actually is. Public charging remains patchy on towing routes, and reported totals of 690 and roughly 700 miles simply end the road-trip argument.
