The case that quality is getting worse

A 1995 family sedan had perhaps a handful of electronic control units and a few hundred metres of wiring. A 2026 equivalent has dozens of ECUs, kilometres of wiring, multiple cameras and radar arrays, over-the-air-updatable software, and driver-assistance systems making real-time decisions.

Every one of those is a new failure mode. You cannot have a "rearview camera image fails to display" recall without a rearview camera and a display and the software connecting them. Ford's own explanation for its record recall volume is explicit: it says it has more than doubled its safety and technical expert teams and increased testing of critical systems, as part of a deliberate strategy to find and fix issues quickly. On this reading, a high recall count is a sign of a company catching problems — and the alternative (undetected defects staying on the road) is far worse.

There's genuine merit to this. A recall is the system working. It means a defect was identified, reported, and is being fixed for free. The frightening scenario isn't a car company issuing lots of recalls — it's a car company sitting on defects it knows about. Safety experts consistently emphasise that recalls are a normal, healthy part of the industry, and often an indication that monitoring systems are functioning.

The data supports the detection story too. Modern telematics mean manufacturers get field data — fault codes, crash reports, warranty claims — faster and in greater volume than ever. A pattern that would once have taken years to surface through scattered dealer reports now appears in a data dashboard in weeks. What you cannot honestly say is the simple version in either direction. "Cars are falling apart" ignores the detection and OTA story. "It's just better detection" ignores the genuine explosion in electronic complexity and supplier concentration.

What it means for you

The macro debate is interesting, but here's what actually matters for a car owner:

The completion rate is the real scandal — not the recall count. NHTSA data shows the average recall completion rate hovers around 48%. Roughly half of all recalled vehicles are never fixed. That's the number that should alarm you, and it's the one entirely within your control. A defect being found is worthless if the car is never repaired.

More recalls means checking more often. If the surface area for defects is expanding, the rational response is to check your VIN more frequently — every six months — and to sign up for automatic alerts (SaferCar app, CARFAX, manufacturer notifications).

A brand with lots of recalls isn't necessarily a bad brand. Ford's numbers look alarming, but a company aggressively finding and fixing defects is, in one real sense, behaving better than a quieter competitor sitting on problems. Judge a manufacturer on how it responds, not just on the raw count.
