Why there are so many plugs

EV connectors evolved separately in different regions, and AC (slow/home) and DC (fast) charging historically used different plugs. The result is an alphabet soup that confuses new buyers. The good news: you only need to know the one or two your car uses, and the picture is consolidating fast - especially in North America.

North America: the NACS takeover

This is the big 2026 story. NACS - the connector Tesla opened up and SAE standardised as J3400 - has become the dominant North American standard. Virtually every major automaker (Ford, GM, Rivian, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Group, Stellantis and others) committed to it, with native NACS ports appearing on 2025 and 2026 models.
